What better time to get down to the basics than the lead up to the debut of our Stella Necklace?

In this post we’ll start with a look at Sun and Moon signs. Get ready for some perfect conversation starters when you’re reunited with friends and want to chat about something other than the five pairs of sweatpants you’ve been rotating through during quarantine.

We should start by noting that Astrology is not accepted as a science per se. There is no way to correlate personality in an experimental manner to determine one’s zodiac, although we know plenty of people that may (*completely*) embody their astrological personality. Instead think of astrology as a way to view cultural or physiological phenomenon, with a whole system of powerful vocabulary that offer insight into human experience; bringing comfort in difficult or stressful times, support and explanation when maybe you can’t seem to find any. It’s appealing to so many of us because it’s like having a friend in our corner, holding our hand, talking us up and offering a route to understanding more about ourselves and what is happening around us.

This post breaks down everything you need to know to get started, but we leave the best part to you, once you know the first few pieces of your astrological fingerprint, take some time to research further into each of these categories.

Sun Signs

Determined by your date of birth, this is the representation of your core, the essence of you, from basic personality to your ego and preferences. Even if you brush off astrology you probably know your sun sign, or your zodiac sign. Let’s look at some terminology:

Zodiac Signs: 

the area of the sky that extends approximately 8˚ north or south, measured in celestial latitude of the path of the sun across the celestial sphere. The zodiac is divided into twelve signs, each occupying 30˚ of celestial longitude corresponding to the constellations.

Zodiacs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

Sun signs:

the twelve signs are further categorized into four triplicities and quadruplicities (yes, these are real astrological terms and double as a great way to boost your scrabble game).

Triplicities are a group of signs belonging to the same element:

FIRE Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Ambitious, self-assured, strong and passionate, creative, fun, very social in their own circles.

EARTH Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn
Grounded and practical, goal-orientated, true to themselves, trustworthy, loyal and stable.

AIR Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

Intellectual, logical and communicative, naturally curious, humorous and unpredictable.

WATER Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces

Friendly, compassionate, emotional and protective, empathetic, intuitive and an overall great time

Quadruplicities determine the energetic forces or the qualities of the signs:

CARDINAL Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn

These signs are positioned at the start of each new season and tend to be strong willed, natural leaders, determined to achieve their goals and very committed.

FIXED Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius
Otherwise known as the stabilizing signs, these four tend to be the most creative, very stable and dependable, focused on their goals and very dignified.

MUTABLE Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces

Like a chameleon and ever changing, these signs are considered adaptable, flexible, always looking to help others and seekers of knowledge and emotional connection.

Moon Signs

If knowing your Sun sign is like being able to bake a cupcake, knowing your Moon Sign is like being able to bake a 4-tiered cheesecake with a strawberry filling cascading from its centre, in other words your Sun sign is your basics and your Moon sign takes it up about 47 levels. This is because the moon changes quickly through the signs, changing every 2 to 2 1/2 days, giving you a more variable and precise understanding of your position within the system. This explains why you can be so different to other people you know who share your same sun sign. Your Moon sign represents your deepest self, the subconscious that drives your emotions, your inner fears, obsessions, the private self that motivates the self that the rest of the world sees.

ARIES you know what you want, and your fire keeps your life always exciting. Competitive and courageous, you can always take control.

TAURUS keeping it cozy, a creature of habit you like it safe and stable all while knowing how to enjoy the luxuries of life. A powerhouse that prefers stability over change.

GEMINI you put everyone around you at ease, a beautiful mind that is forever young and fun. Kind and generous, you generally keep your feelings hidden deep down.

CANCER if you’re born under the Cancer Moon sign you are extremely empathetic, have a sentimental side and can understand the emotions of those around you. Always loyal with lots of love to go around.

LEO enthusiastic, you love whole heartedly with a fierce passion. A little bit of drama and excitement, you’re always a fun persona to have around.

VIRGO logical and organized you’re a bit of a perfectionist (hey it’s not a bad thing). You fill people with joy and can help others overcome just about anything.

LIBRA easy and breezy, you bring harmony in all that you do. You’re great at seeing things for what they are without letting emotion cloud the situation.

SCORPIO there’s no tricking you if you have the Scorpio Moon sign, super intuitive and graceful in all that you do. You’re intense but in the best way possible.

SAGITTARIUS your instincts guide you, you trust them, and they don’t let you down. You’re not overly emotional, instead logical, always looking to be independent and free.

CAPRICORN determined and disciplined, you like your control. Slightly, reserved you don’t just let anyone into your feelings and inner thoughts. You enjoy stability in all aspects of your life.

AQUARIUS unique and private, you always have a few tricks up your sleeve that may even surprise a long-time partner. You prize justice and fairness and uphold high standards for those in your life.

PISCES emotions run high with you as you’re constantly absorbing energy around you. You are loving and kind and always gentle and sympathetic to those you love.
